CES this week featured a concept cell phone that is powered by pouring Coca-Cola into it:
“The concept is using bio battery to replace the traditional battery to create a pollution free environment. Bio battery is an ecologically friendly energy generates electricity from carbohydrates (currently sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst. By using bio battery as the power source of the phone, it only needs a pack of sugary drink and it generates water and oxygen while the battery dies out.”
Interestingly, this was the plot of the original Back to the Future draft in which the time machine was powered by Coke. Furthermore, the scene from Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull where Indy protects himself from an atomic blast inside a fridge is directly lifted from the climax of this draft.

I just noticed something. In both Weird Al’s polka version of Gold Digga and Anya Maria’s recent cover of T.I.’s Whatever You Like, the (white) coverers replaced the line “broke nigga” with “broke broke.” Like there’s some kind of AP style guide out there for this that they both referred to. Just something I wanted to share.

Party on Saturday……
We are having a party at our house next weekend, in celebration of
Valentine’s day and the long President’s Day weekend, and finally,
Jeremy’s (long delayed) welcome home. Ben and Jeremy and Karen would love
to have you join us. The party will begin around 8:45, and for those
of you who like to stay up late, Ben has promised breakfast at dawn on
the back porch watching the sun come up [and possibly sabering a champagne bottle]. The date is Saturday,
February 14th. For those of you who already have Valentine’s plans,
please feel free to drop by before, or especially after your other
plans (we hope to be here late). Daniel has suggested coming dressed
as your favorite president, past or present, but that is totally
optional. (Please please do this, it would be amazing.)
Feel free to bring friends and lovers. Spouses too.

Ever since Election Night, I get choked up really easily. This video totally made me cry. As my sister Hannah said to me in an e-mail, “When there’s so much pain in the world, why are people trying so hard to destroy happiness?”

I read a reference to Orwell’s famous essay on politics and the English language, which made me want to go read it. I found a copy here. In fact this site contains searchable versions of all of Orwell’s works. Homage to Catalonia is one of my favorite books.

New York City is playing the best roller derby in the country: our Gotham Girls are the 2008 national champions.
“The 2009 schedule is To Be Determined, but will likely kick off in April and run through November with another exciting season of battle between the Mayhem, Bombshells, Gridlock and Pain.”

Two things for my inaugural post:
1. I’m listening to The Hold Steady for the first time and I surprisingly actually really like them! Good taste Adam, I had no idea!
2. CREDO is paying for people across the country to have ‘End of Bush’ celebration parties. You can get up to $100 in party supplies.
